Canvas Coffee House is planning to open in the coming weeks in the Port Warwick space formerly occupied by HIP Innovative Studio Boutique, the partners said.
Canvas co-owners Daniel Haskett and Rahat Hossain met as customers of Jolly Roasters within the HIP space. Haskett, a 24-year-old commercial and residential Realtor, and Hossain, a 30-year-old real estate investor, immediately cliqued over coffee and had even envisioned opening a coffee shop.
So when HIP owner Anna Hubbard announced she would be closing at the end of 2018, the regular HIP-goers said they seized the opportunity to take over the space at 2170 William Styron Square South, which was already equipped for coffee-making.
“It was kind of heartbreaking to hear they were shutting this location down,” Hossain said. “We’ve seen the type of people it brought in. It created a young energy for hip people and we want to continue that with this space.”
Haskett, a Christopher Newport University grad, plans on marketing to CNU students. Fellow alum Alex Hoyes of York County will be the coffee master, he said.
“All three of us see coffee as an art form,” Haskett said.
While the partners want to continue HIP’s embrace of community by welcoming meetings and collaborative events, the name alludes to the owners seeing the space as a blank canvas that will have its own aesthetic, Haskett said. Local art for sale will be displayed on the walls.
“We need a space of serendipity,” said Haskett, who also lives in Port Warwick.
The coffee house plans to sell pastries and Discover Teas as well, they said.
Hubbard posted an online letter to let customers know HIP was closing and to thank customers for their support since HIP opened in June 2017.
In the letter, she said she wanted to get back to expanding her jewelry line and wanted to spend more time with family. HIP sold her jewelry in addition to other artisan products, including Chalk Paint by Annie Sloan. The studio hosted various creative workshops. Still, Hubbard won’t be a stranger and said she will share details on her future endeavors later.
