Press Release from East Coast Music Conference
Norfolk, VA, Feb 2019 – East Coast Music Conference (ECMC) adds Kevin Lyman, another major innovator in the music industry, to its roster of speakers during ECMC May 9 – 12, 2019. Kevin Lyman is best known as the visionary entrepreneur who created the Vans Warped Tour.
Lyman has reimagined the live show and festival experience, shaped popular culture, and rocked corporate branding. Kevin founded the Vans Warped Tour in 1995 and curated and ran the groundbreaking festival throughout its 24-year run. In addition, Kevin has produced or promoted such live music experiences as Taste of Chaos, It’s Not Dead Festival, the Alternative Press Music Awards, Pilgrimage, Mayhem Festival, and Country Throwdown, among others.
His punk rock intrepidness, his steely commitment to philanthropic pursuits, his savvy business instincts, and his on-the-pulse aesthetic sensibility have guided him on a successful and winding career that has spanned 37 years. Today, Kevin embraces a new era of unbound creative and business opportunities with The Kevin Lyman Group, a premiere event production and strategy firm. “This is a rebirth, and I am looking forward to new opportunities and fresh challenges,” he says.
Central to Kevin’s work have been his core principles. “Punk rock is about challenging the norm and changing the world,” he says. “What’s guided me in this quest has been my philosophy which includes music, education, philanthropy, and bringing people together.” ECMC Executive Producer Grace Garvin adds, “We really are privileged to have someone like Kevin Lyman speak at ECMC. Our mission, coming from our own DIY background, is to help artists take control of their careers and connect with music fans. We’re building a supportive community that bridges genres, geography, and more through music. Kevin has been doing that for over 30 years. He’s an inspirational figure.”
Kevin discovered his destiny in college when he accidently stumbled into a show by LA punk pioneers T.S.O.L. Roused by the power of live music, Kevin began to put on fundraisers for his college. Post-graduation, Kevin averaged working up to 320 shows a year as he branched out from punk to metal, rock, and world music.
During the fertile 1990s alternative music scene, Kevin was a Lollapalooza stage manager. While there, at the forefront of a new fiery culture, he sagely sensed the power of the burgeoning movement around extreme sports and heavy music. His vision became The Warped Tour. With this tour he was able to connect the dots between the lifestyle experience, marketing, sponsorship, and his lifelong commitment to philanthropy.
Kevin has since been recognized as the Billboard Touring Awards “Humanitarian of the Year” (2009); he has been awarded an honoree at the Grammy/MusiCares MAP Fund gala (2011 and 2014); and he has been inducted into the Top Dog Touring Hall of Fame (2012). Kevin recently announced his professorship at the USC Thornton School of Music. Currently, he also serves on the board of directors for MusiCares, TJ Martel, Hands that Rock, Saint Archer Brewery, and he is an advisor for the Los Angeles Fairplex.
