Enabling Safe and Secure Home Automation: Problems, Best Practices, and Future Opportunities
by Adwait Nadkarni
This talk will provide an overview of the current security and safety problems in home automation, as well as the opportunities to address them. I will first talk about security problems from our most recent work on smart home security, and discuss how the problems could be avoided with key software development best practices. I will then transition to problems that cannot be addressed just through best practices, and require active developer participation. I will discuss the initial development and results of a framework that enables Internet of Things (IoT) devices to collaborate for implementing safety use-cases, the next steps, challenges, and potential opportunities for developer involvement.
Adwait Nadkarni is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Computer Science at The College of William & Mary. Prof Nadkarni’s primary domain of expertise is security and privacy, with specific in interest in the areas of home automation, operating systems security, mobile security, and user data privacy.
