Press Release from GFX Tidewater
Global Fashion Exchange (GFX) and Fashion Revolution are coming this Thursday, April 25th 2019 from 5pm–7pm at Percolator in MacArthur Center.
The fashion industry is one of the most polluting industries in the world: an average American throws away 80 pounds of clothes per year. The Global Swap Event is a collaboration between GFX and Fashion Revolution, held during Fashion Revolution Week April 22-28 2019, to bring awareness to consumption in the fashion industry.
We are thrilled to announce the first local event for Global Fashion Exchange Tidewater in partnership with Percolator co-working space.
The swap is simple, no money changes hands and everyone is invited. To participate in the swap you must contribute at least one garment, clean and good quality, to the common pool of clothing. The swap will also feature local DJs from Music Theory Studios. DJ Karee of MTS Turntable Institute will have students participating. Sonya Z. Phillips, fashion designer and creative director of Stretch Couture, will be sharing upcycling demos and offering $5 “quick fixes” for any items needing minor alterations.
Percolator is creative, collaborative community for entrepreneurs and innovators in the heart of Downtown Norfolk. Percolator’s purpose is to revolutionize the concept of office space and the way that people work.
“When I heard about sustainable fashion, I immediately saw the correlation with Percolator’s mission, as people are changing the way they work as much as they way they live. Sustainable fashion has common values that Percolator movement aspires to, including community, collaboration, learning, and sustainability. This event is going to bring awareness to this region regarding a new era of community collaborating, even sharing or exchanging our clothes.”—Marcela Silva, Percolator Operational Manager and Consultant
GFX is a sustainable fashion platform empowering people to change the way they shop. GFX was founded by Patrick Duffy and Brooke Blashill, in 2013 after the Rana Plaza collapse shook the fashion industry. Since establishing, GFX has become the premier company to produce fun and fabulous events all over the world to promote and encourage mindful consumption and sustainable fashion.
From inspiring consumers to recycle their clothes to collaborating with brands to create sustainable product collections, our goal is to help close the loop on fashion. We do this through educational content, cultural events, and corporate partnerships. To date, GFX has extended the life of over 1 million pounds of clothes through its recycling program, collaborated with partners such as the United Nations and H&M, and reached over 1 billion people across six contents through GFX campaigns and events.
GFX hosts exciting cultural events with music, art installations, and a boutique-style swapping experience where people geek out over their amazing finds. Guests learn about sustainability, take immediate action on-site and share their positive experience over social media, helping to further educate their friends. GFX has grown quickly because we’re making sustainability sexy and fun.
Fashion Revolution is a global movement that runs all year long. With ambassadors and revolutionaries all over the world, they celebrate fashion as a positive influence while also scrutinizing industry practices and raising awareness of the fashion industry’s most pressing issues. Fashion Revolution aims to show that change is possible and to encourage those who are on a journey to create a more ethical and sustainable future for fashion.
Fashion Revolution Week is part of Fashion Revoluiton’s “#whomademyclothes” campaign, which falls on the anniversary of the Rana Plaza factory collapse—an incident that resulted in 1,134 deaths and around 2,500 injuries on April 24, 2013. That is the day Fashion Revolution was born. During this week, brands and producers are encouraged to respond with the hashtag #imadeyourclothes in order to demonstrate transparency in their supply chain.
Combining their forces to create the Global Swap Event, GFX and Fashion Revolutions are bringing positive change to the industry and awareness of ethical and environmental issues in fashion!
