Due to overwhelming interest from entrepreneurs, the “Innovation Commercialization Assistance Program” (ICAP) will be offered two more times in Hampton Roads this year:
- June 12, 19, 26 at Percolator MacArthur Campus (Norfolk)
- October 7, 15, 21 at Christopher Newport University (Newport News)
ICAP is a free startup bootcamp aimed at innovators and early stage entrepreneurs. It is focused on assisting early-stage companies in preparing for future venture investment. Participants, including entrepreneurs and inventors, learn how to bring their new technologies and innovations to the market in a short period of time by helping to identify potential customers and develop successful business models. It includes free training programs and counseling services offered through ICAP instructors and Virginia based Small Business Development Center (SBDC) counselors for up to two years after the initial program. The deadline to apply for the June bootcamp is June 1st. The deadline for the October bootcamp will be announced at a later date.
“ICAP introduces teams to the Lean Startup Methodology and connects them with local partners to work towards developing a sustainable business model that investors will fund, “ said Bob Smith, ICAP Program Manager. “ICAP has found great partners in the Hampton Roads region and is looking forward to working with around 50 teams from the region in 2019.”
Hampton Roads partners include Old Dominion University, 757 Accelerate, 757 Angels, StartWheel, Norfolk State University, Virginia Beach Economic Development, Christopher Newport University and Percolator, with other partners to be added.
“ICAP provides early-stage startup founders a fantastic opportunity to hone their business models and identify potential pitfalls sooner,” said Chris Shelton, Executive Director of StartWheel. “The program itself represents unprecedented collaboration among multiple entrepreneurial support providers in the Region and state, which indicates that we’re moving in the right direction culturally.”
The program has been offered twice this year, and three times last year here in Hampton Roads.
“ICAP is the perfect program for early stage entrepreneurs to test and validate their market and business strategy. ODU is proud to serve as a major partner with ICAP, given our aligned missions of supporting entrepreneurs to grow and scale their businesses”, said Nancy Grden, Executive Director of the Old Dominion University Strome Entrepreneurial Center and Entrepreneurship Initiatives
The ICAP program is funded by the Commonwealth of Virginia and administered by George Mason University and the Virginia Small Business Development Center Network (VSBDC).
